Stir Fry 101

This is designed to be a short, short post on what I think is essential for a good stir fry.

Please note: These suggestions are purely my opinion and not actual stir fry requirements. However, if you want your stir fry to be anything close to amazing, you will take heed 😉

Something Scrumptious Standard Stir Fry

(say that 10 times fast)
  • Brown rice
  • Broccoli- frozen, fresh, it doesn’t matter
  • Onions- and lots of them
  • Green Pepper- okay, I use green pepper in just about everything…
  • Extra Firm Tofu- emphasis on firm; this is a stir fry and not a scramble
  • Scrumptious Stir Fry Sauce- see recipe below.

Prepare the rice! It’s going to take forever so you should probably start before you begin to actually cook. Rice is always incredibly difficult for me to time right and always takes longer than it should.

Chop the veggies. I like my veggies crispy, so I don’t throw them in right away. Cut up the tofu; I like mine cubed, you can do whatever with yours (except try to stir fry the whole block).

Toss the tofu in a nice, big, wok with some oil. Cook on Medium-high until the tofu starts to brown (barely). Then throw all the veggies in and cook on Medium High for around five minutes.; this of course, all depends on your veggie firmness preferences. 

Now that you have your stir fry cooking. You will need a nice sauce to go on top. Although just plain ‘ol soy sauce can be wonderful atop a steaming plate of veggies and tofu, I like to dress mine up into a thick sauce for most stir fry dishes.

Scrumptious Stir-Fry Sauce

  • Soy Sauce- I eyeball it
  • Water- ^ it too
  • 1/2 T sugar
  • 1 tsp. cayenne
  • 1 T Cornstarch mixed with 1 T water (this really varies, I eyeball it too based on the quantity of soy sauce)

Heat the soy sauce, water, sugar, and cayenne in a sauce pan. The water (in case you were wondering) tones down the soy sauce and makes it less salty and more savory. Heat the soy sauce mixture until boiling, then add the cornstarch mixture and stir the heck out of it because it will start to coagulate. At this point, you will want to turn off the heat and move the pan to a cooler location so that you don’t become a victim of Mt. Scrumptious Sauce when it erupts.

Drizzle sauce over stir fry and enjoy.
